<image:title>Blog - The Birmingham Blitz and the Evacuation of Children - A total of 2241 of these brave Brummies lost their lives, 3,010 were seriously injured, and 3,682 sustained lesser injuries. They are commemorated on the 'Tree of Life' memorial, which stands on Edgbaston Street. The massive bomb damage to the 19th-century slums in the inner city areas caused the loss of 12,391 houses and contributed to the development of many postwar large council estates across the city. Birmingham used prefabricated housing, also known as prefabs, as its initial emergency response.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Influence of the Indian Subcontinent on the City of a Thousand Trades - In 1903 when the Peaky Blinders were at the top of their game, a small grocery shop sat at the end of the High Street. It was founded in 1820 by William Sumner and was now run by his grandson John. The business was doing pretty well, but it was nothing particularly special. John’s sister Mary suffered from terrible indigestion, and a friend gave her a small packet of medicinal tea made of tiny particles, not the larger leaves that were more common back then. The tea was miraculous and cured her indigestion, so she passed some on to her gardener and other sufferers.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Influence of the Indian Subcontinent on the City of a Thousand Trades - When John’s restaurant opened in 1945 on Steelhouse Lane, only about 1000 people from India lived in Birmingham. However, following the British Nationality Act of 1948, which gave British citizenship to citizens of former colonies, the number of immigrants from the Indian subcontinent skyrocketed as they arrived to fill the gaps in the labour market left following the second world war.</image:title>

The statue was inspired by TV's Peaky Blinders and is by the sculptor Paul Margetts. Literacy rates grew substantially in the early 19th century, and the traditional quill had its drawbacks. It needed to be regularly sharpened, so the new steel nibs were in great demand as they did not need to be sharpened, just wiped clean of ink when you had finished. By 1870, three out of four steel pens were made in Birmingham and the steel pen opened up writing to the masses.</image:title>

The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter is in the old Smith and Pepper factory. Here you can see the cramped conditions where people worked for an average of eleven hours a day. Children as young as eight worked in the factory alongside men and women. In the museum, you can see a tiny stool that a child would have stood on to reach their workbench. There was a rapid expansion of the jewellery trade in this area in the 1800s. The growth of industry into this area was aided by the establishment of the Birmingham Assay Office in 1773, which was petitioned for by Boulton and other industrialists.</image:title>

Next, head to the Coffin Works at 13-15 Fleet Street, a wonderful museum that shows you what it was like to work in the Newman Brother's factory producing coffin fixtures. Fleet Street was the home of the notorious Fleet Street Slogging gang. The gangs' territories were relatively small, often named after a single street that made up most of that territory. This is such a street. The canals not only played an essential part in Birmingham's industrial history, but also acted as lines between different gangs' territories. Alongside Fleet Street runs the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal, which was a significant boundary between the territories of the Rough Fleet Gang and the Gun Quarter Gangs of Price Street, Loveday Street and Weaman Street.</image:title>

It stands on the grounds of Birmingham University's Edgbaston Campus, where Birmingham Mayor Joseph Chamberlain was their first chancellor. At 100 meters tall can be seen from far and wide. It is even said to have been the inspiration for the tower of Orthanc, the Black Tower of Isengard, in J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings Trilogy as well as the clock tower in Pixar's Monsters University. However, this is not the only clock named after Chamberlain. Here in the Jewellery Quarter, the iconic Chamberlain Clock stands at the junction of the Vyse and Frederick Street with Warstone Lane. It was constructed in 1903 to mark Chamberlain's visit to South Africa and was unveiled in January 1904 by his wife. The Jewellery Quarter is a wonderful area of Birmingham full of hidden gems, which inspired Ian Mc Millan to create his own hidden gem, which is our next stop.</image:title>

The pubs in the area are "filled with people of low reputation", and at about noon, they all spill out onto the streets intoxicated and looking for a fight. With not much to do on a Sunday afternoon, they spent their time quarrelling and fighting in the streets. Youths congregated, flocking to the area from various parts of the city and from various trades, including iron and brass works and people from the nearby Jewellery Quarter. They have gathered to gamble in games of Pitch and Toss and are noisy and violent and blocking the way for the local residents. Eventually, the police arrive, but by now, news of a good fight has spread around the city and now over 200 people are here on Henrietta Street fighting and brawling.</image:title>

Designed by Roger Eykyn of Wolverhampton, building started in 1777, and the church was consecrated in 1779. It was built on land given by Charles Colmore from his Newhall estate. St. Paul's House is one of the square's original residential buildings, but spent many years as an industrial workshop when the area became less attractive to the wealthy industrialists who had originally inhabited these streets. It is now an excellent bar and restaurant and a great place to get dinner at the end of a day exploring the Jewellery Quarter and reflect on all the great things you have seen.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Sheldons - The Inspiration for the Peaky Blinder Shelby family - An incident followed in which Beach and his men broke into one of Sheldon's houses and set fire to it, but then Beach was attacked as he walked with his cousin on Lawley Street by a gang armed with a knife and gun. When John and Joseph Sheldon, Coaly Jones and Edward Collins were sentenced for the assault, the judge came down hard on them, describing them as dangerous and violent men. The Sheldon brothers were each sentenced to five years of hard labour, a move that would severely weaken the Sheldon Gang as they were in prison for such a long time. While the Sheldons were in prison, Beach was convicted of wounding two drunken sisters in a pub with a pen knife during a disagreement over a drink. Beach protested his innocence, saying he only ever fought with his fists and never used a weapon, which was backed up by his previous convictions. However, the judge did not believe him, and he was sentenced to fourteen months of hard labour. When both men were released, there was yet another assault but then an extraordinary thing happened. The local police had a great deal of respect for Beach because he did not use weapons, fought fairly and often fought on his own against numerous attackers, unlike the Sheldons, who fought dirty in large groups. However, the police wanted to see an end to this vendetta as much as anyone, so they clubbed together to pay for Beach to emigrate to Canada, which he did. However, the vendetta did not end immediately, as Beach had left men to defend his turf. A fight broke out between these men and Sheldon's men in the Kings Arms, the pub frequented by the Sheldons. During the fight, a bullet passed through John Sheldon's Billy Cock hat and lodged in the wall behind him and he was then hit over the head with a metal cosh and received wounds that meant he needed to be hospitalised. When the men were brought to trial, the judge made it clear that enough was enough and sentenced the Sheldons to long sentences, which basically ended the Vendetta and relative peace returned to the city.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Sheldons - The Inspiration for the Peaky Blinder Shelby family - Samuel's first conviction in 1886 was when he was only 17. He served three months for stoning a cyclist and a policeman and only a year later got another three months with hard labour for again stoning a policeman. Within a few months of his release, he was again arrested for the same offence and was described as a violent man with over a dozen assault convictions. These offences were in line with the assumption that he was a Peaky Blinder, coming from Blinder territory and having the clothes and Billy Cock hat that made them easily recognisable.</image:title>

The move to the countryside was against the trend of moving industry away from the countryside and into the cities. Still, better transport access for milk that was shipped in by canal and for cocoa that was brought in by rail from London, Southampton and Liverpool docks was taken into consideration. <image:title>Blog - Molls, Mistresses and Machinists - The Story of the Women Surrounding the Peaky Blinders. - Jessie Shrimpton was raised in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter and was the daughter of a Jeweller journeyman William Shrimpton. Her mother was also a strong, principled woman who had campaigned for women's suffrage. Jessie, who was born in 1902 on Talbot Street, began work filling shock absorbers at Joseph Lucas Motor Component factory. She briefly married Albert Eden, but the marriage that Jessie described as a "folly" did not last long because Albert did not share Jessie's political convictions.
During the General strike of 1926, Jessie convinced the non-unionised working women to walk out and join the strike. She became the shop steward for the Transport and General Worker's Union. Five years later, in 1931, she led 10,000 women out on a week-long strike after the factory set unrealistic standards for productivity-based pay. After the strike, Lucas' were forced to back down.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Molls, Mistresses and Machinists - The Story of the Women Surrounding the Peaky Blinders. - The Peaky Blinders molls were impeccably dressed with expensive, tailored clothing, pearls, and silk handkerchiefs that imitated their boyfriends. Their fringe was long and covered all of their forehead, obscuring one eye like their boyfriends' caps and Billycocks. On their heads were elaborate hats decorated with feathers and flowers. Although many of them appeared tough, they were often also victims, with the silk scarves and crisp blouses hiding the bruises and scars of domestic violence. One Peaky Arrieta, as they were sometimes referred to, once said, "He'll pinch and punch you every time he walks out with you. And if you speak to another chap, he don't mind kicking you." Unfortunately, those pinches and punches were often much more than that. In December 1898, James Harper, a metal polisher and suspected Peaky Blinder, was found guilty of the manslaughter of Emily Pimm, his former girlfriend, who he had kicked to death with his steel-capped boots while she lay on the floor. Two months previously, he had kicked her in the stomach, causing her to miscarry their unborn child, and a warrant had been issued for his arrest, but they were to catch him too late for poor Emily.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Molls, Mistresses and Machinists - The Story of the Women Surrounding the Peaky Blinders. - Disagreements between the hardened women of Birmingham and the Black Country were often settled in a brawl. Indeed, the Black Country women who often worked alongside the men at the pit head, brickyards, nail shops and ash mounds were renowned for their fighting. In May 1884, one such fight broke out between two nail makers, 43-year-old "Black Hannah" Stevenson and 23-year-old Elizabeth Chater. They fought at the base of a slag heap near Old Mill, but it was not just an unplanned brawl. It was reported that the numerous spectators fled across the border into Staffordshire when the Warwickshire Constabulary arrived and that an umpire had been present who then declared Elizabeth the winner.</image:title>

He embarked on a massive modernisation programme of radical reform to improve the living conditions and education of children in Birmingham. He introduced free schools to the city along with the 1870 Education Act and founded the University of Birmingham, possibly his most enduring progressive achievement.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Birmingham's Canals: From the Arteries of the City and Gang’s Territorial Lines to a Vibrant Tourist Destination. - A letter to the Birmingham Daily Post in June 1885 told of the writer's distress when he encountered two canal boats. He said one had a man, a woman and seven children on board, and none could read or write. He said the woman was ill but "managed with a sorrowful face to creep to the door", where she said she had tried to send her children to school, but they had been turned away. The letter's author tells of how not educating these children is uncivilised and how society should be more supportive of these families. However, many in society saw the boatmen and their families as violent criminals who drank heavily. This was partly true, but much of their violence was within their own communities for disagreements such as jumping the queues at the locks. Fights, like those between the slogging gangs, were often the result of drink which numbed the hard life these men experienced. You had to be hardened in these cruel environments to survive; fighting was just part of that survival.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Birmingham's Canals: From the Arteries of the City and Gang’s Territorial Lines to a Vibrant Tourist Destination. - Now the canals are the playground of Birmingham's professionals, a place for tourists to visit to enjoy the attractions nearby and a place to walk or take a boat trip or walking tour. Many grab a bite to eat in Jonathan’s restaurant in the Roundhouse or across the water in Brindley Place, named after the canal's original engineer James Brindley. At night, along the canal side, where once people feared to tread, now crowds spill out from the bars onto the towpath laughing and chatting with friends. Below are several recommendations for ways to enjoy Birmingham's canals during a visit to the city.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Birmingham's Canals: From the Arteries of the City and Gang’s Territorial Lines to a Vibrant Tourist Destination. - To truly understand the canals, you need to realise that the canals had different functions for different parts of society. At the height of Birmingham's industrial success, the workforce which powered those industries did not profit from that success. They lived in poor, unsanitary conditions and breathed in air that was toxic with pollution. Some used the canals as a source of coal to keep them warm in the winter. Coal could be dived for at the bottom of the canal or picked up from the slack on its banks. There was little to keep the poor entertained, and many turned to the canals to quell the boredom and make life more bearable.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - "Why Birmingham's Slogging Gangs Were More Than Just Criminals" - Our owner and main guide, Edward, has his roots firmly planted in the streets of Birmingham. His great-grandmother Marie Rose was born on Summer Lane, just a few doors down from Billy Kimber. Her mother had the Summer Lane Draper's shop, and her father worked, like many men in this area, in the Brassworks. It was a tough life with overcrowded housing, poor sanitation and dangerous working conditions. When Marie was only a year old, her father died of pneumonia, a common cause of death in these difficult times. Life was tough not only for Edward's family but also for all the working class in the city. The heavy industry was not also dangerous for the men working in the metal works but also for the people breathing in the pollution that the furnaces pumped out. Any open spaces in the city were infilled with cramped cheap back-to-back housing for those swarming into the city in search of work. Squalid slums stretched from the present site of New Street Station to Snow Hill and down into Digbeth and Deritend. During the 19th century, the population of Birmingham rose from 73.670 to 744,973. J Cummings Walters of the Birmingham daily gazette described the conditions these working men and women had to endure.</image:title>
